Arunachal Pradesh: Special POCSO court sentences man to 20 years jail

Topha Wangshu, a resident of Longkhaw village in Longding district of Arunachal Pradesh, was sentenced to rigorous imprisonment (RI) for 20 years by the special POCSO court on March 15 for raping a schoolgirl.

Earlier, in November 2019, the victim delivered a premature foetus in her school girls’ toilet.

The minor lodged a written FIR, alleging that the accused Topha raped her on June 19.

Upon receipt of the FIR, Longding Police Station OC Inspector O Lego registered the case under Section 376 (2) (i) IPC r/w Section 4 of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.

The accused has pleaded that he was in love with the minor and their sexual encounter was consensual.

The special court has referred the matter to the District Legal Services Authority for providing adequate compensation for the rehabilitation of the victim under the Arunachal Pradesh Victim Compensation Scheme, 2011.
