Arunachal Pradesh: Man arrested on charges of cyberbullying

ITANAGAR: Police from Bomdila sector, on Sunday, arrested a man who blackmailed his victims by uploading obscene messages and videos on social media.

Based on specific inputs, a team led by the officer-in-charge of Bomdila police station, Krishnendu Dev launched a search operation to apprehend the accused.

Police identified the accused Md Rofikul Islam of Solmara, under Assam’s Sonitpur district.

“The accused had acquired (the) mobile number of the victim and started sending obscene messages and videos on WhatsApp,” sources quoted Dev.

“Later, the accused also posted on various social media that victim is a solicitor (prostitute) thereby raging her image,” he said.

“The victim started receiving many phone calls from various men as the accused had shared her mobile number to several people. The accused further demanded Rs. 50,000/- to the victim for revealing the name of the person who had shared her mobile number to him,” he added.

Reportedly, Islam has been booked under Bomdila PS case No. 05/21, u/s 354(a)/509/384 IPC r/w section 66 (e) of IT Act.

Police also recovered the mobile phone used in committing the crime.
