ITANAGAR:

The All Bogong Students’ Union (ABSU) of Pasighat, on Friday, met Arunachal Pradesh Minister of Environment & Forest Mama Natung in Itanagar to extend its support for the launching of the ‘Airgun Surrender Abhiyan’ in April.

To show its solidarity, the ABSU also handed over a letter of appreciation to Natung for the government’s initiative.

“The ABSU, on behalf of denizens of Pasighat and all the Bogong Banggo villages would like to thank you for your samaritan and noble initiative of launching Airgun surrender Abhiyan which will be enforced statewide by the forest department from April,” the letter stated.

“Because of rampant killing and hunting by our people, many rare species of birds and animals have already gone extinct and some are on the verge of extinction,” the ABSU said.

“The protection of these birds and animals is important to maintain and protect the forest coverage for ecological balance which, if once imbalanced, may cause direct and indirect effects on the lives of human beings,” it said.

“We are ready to co-operate the government for the Abhiyan. We have also urged the minister to direct the Dy. Commissioner, East Siang district to implement the Airgun Surrender Abhiyan in the length & breadth of the district,” ABSU General Secretary Siang Moyong said.

Meanwhile, Divisional Forest Officer of the D Ering Wildlife Sanctuary Tasang Taga said that a complete ban on airguns would be more effective to preserve wildlife.
