Sikkim govt to mark Chasok Tongnam festival as state holiday: CM

Sikkim Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang on Saturday said the government would soon make a provision to mark Chasok Tongnam—a principal festival of tribal Limboo community, a state holiday.

The Chief Minister made this announcement during the concluding day of the Chasok Tongnam festival, which began on December 17 at Yangthong, Soreng West Sikkim.

“The festivals celebrated in Sikkim should stand for community inclusiveness,” Tamang said.

While addressing the gathering, the Chief Minister also announced that Soreng and Pakyong would be officially announced as the new two districts of Sikkim, adding that Primary Health Centre Soreng would be upgraded into a Community Health Centre.

He also stressed the need to tap the immense tourism potential of the Soreng Chakung Constituency.

Road construction projects will be launched to connect various tourist spots and the surrounding markets of Soreng.

The Chief Minister also briefed about the agreement between the State Government and the Sikkim Manipal University and, mentioned that the government has gained fifty seat quota, free of cost and thirty seats for paid quota so that eighty Sikkimese students could pursue MBBS yearly.
