Meghalaya Assembly Speaker Metbah Lyngdoh is seeking financial assistance from Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla for the construction of the new assembly building in Mawdiangdiang.

The total cost of the project is at an estimated Rs. 141 crore and the tender value is Rs. 127.76 crore.

Lyngdoh said that the Assembly Secretariat intends to hold the 2022 budget session in the new Assembly building as it would be the 50th anniversary of Meghalaya attaining statehood.

“But that depends if everything goes according to plan,” Lyngdoh said.

The 125-year-old structure that housed the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly burned down in a devastating fire in 2001, and since then, the state did not have a permanent Assembly building.

Lyngdoh is currently attending a two-day Presiding Officers’ Conference in Kevadiya, Gujarat.

President Ram Nath Kovind inaugurated the conference.
