The Asom Gana Parishad (AGP), a regional party born out of the six-year-long Assam Agitation in the early 1980s, is rebranding itself to connect and reach out to the people at the grassroot level.

After a “show of strength” in the form of a motorbike rally christened ‘Jatiya Oikya Samaroh’ in Upper Assam’s Bokakhat on December 6, the regional party on December 8 held its first meeting of the newly made up central committee here.

AGP president Atul Bora said a threadbare discussion on the regional party’s future course of action was held at the meeting.

"I have urged every level of the organisation, right from the Pran Parishads to Bidhan and Zila Parishads to intensify public outreach," he said.

Bora, who is also the State Agriculture Minister said, "The induction of members through mobile app will start from December 15 while the Pran Parishad and the Bidhan Parishad meetings will be held on December 18 and December 23 respectively."

"From January 1st to 15th of next year, every Panchayat Parishad shall reach out to a minimum of 500 households," Bora, who chaired the meeting at the party headquarters here at Ambari, said.

Party working president Keshab Mahanta, vice presidents, general secretaries, other office bearers, members of the central committee and functionaries of the sister organisations of AGP were present at the meeting.
