In a first, transgender woman to contest Assembly polls in Tamil Nadu

In a first, a transgender woman will be contesting in the upcoming Tamil Nadu Assembly elections from Madurai South Constituency, sources said on Monday.

Reportedly, the candidate Bharathi Kannama is representing the New Generation People's Party.

"I am proud to be contesting in the election as a transgender for the first time in India," Kannama was quoted by ANI.

Notably, Kannama had also unsuccessfully contested as an Independent candidate for the Lok Sabha seat in 2014 and 2019 from Madurai Constituency.

Kannama holds a Doctorate in Sociology, Master's degree in Sociology, Bachelor's degree in Economics including a diploma in Computer Engineering.

Meanwhile, Kannama has promised to make Madurai a model city and usher in development if voted to power.
