TOKYO:

The Tokyo 2020 Olympic Torch Relay kickstarted in Fukushima, Japan, on Thursday, amid the global pandemic.

Reportedly, it will be passed by some 10,000 runners for about 200m each, across Japan's prefectures over the next 121 days ahead of the summer Olympic Games Opening Ceremony on July 23.

"The Olympic flame continues to light up the world from Japan! The cauldron is already lit for the start of the #OlympicTorchRelay ceremony from Fukushima Prefecture," tweeted Tokyo Olympic 2020 on its Twitter handle.

"Japanese footballer Iwashimuzu Azusa, 2011 @FIFAWWC winner and #London2012 silver medalist, is the first reliever at the start of #OlympicTorchRelay in Fukushima," it further added.

"The Olympic Games #Tokyo2020 will be held from 23 July until 8 August 2021," it added.

Meanwhile, Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga said that the government is coordinating very closely with the Tokyo metropolitan government and with the International Olympic Committee for the smooth conduct of the games.
