One of Saudi Arabia’s most prominent political activists was released from prison on Wednesday after serving three years behind bars.
Loujain al-Hathloul was sentenced to almost six years of imprisonment back in December 2020 when she had pushed to end the ban on women driving in Saudi Arabia.
Held for 1001 days, Hathloul was accused of crimes such as agitating for change and pursuing a foreign agenda in the Kingdom.
The 31-year-old Saudi activist had earlier raised various issues on human rights, democratic principles in Saudi Arabia, and was held under anti-terrorism laws.
Her arrest sparked a global debate over the gulf nation policies in dealing with individuals who raise their voice against the system.
