Powerful earthquake hits central Croatia
ZAGREB (CROATIA):
A powerful earthquake measuring 6.3 on the Richter Scale hit Croatia during the early hours on Tuesday, causing considerable damage to life and property.
The European Mediterranean Seismological Center informed, “An earthquake measuring 6.3 on the Richter scale hit 46 kilometres (17 miles) southeast of Zagreb”.
While the extent of the damage is yet to be ascertained, initial reports said that the earthquake has caused widespread damage in the region.
A regional television broadcaster N1 showed that a building had collapsed over a car in Patrinja town and, firefighters trying to remove the debris from the car which was buried underneath the rubble.
The earthquake was felt throughout Croatia and the neighbouring countries of Serbia and Bosnia, according to reports.
So far, no casualties have been reported except for injuries.
President of the European Union Commission, Ursula Von Der Leyen took to Twitter to extend her support to Croatia. She tweeted, "We are ready to support. I have asked @JanezLenarcic to stand ready to travel to Croatia as soon as the situation allows."
