US President Joe Biden spoke to his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping on Wednesday, and according to White House reports, it was their first call since Biden took office.
The introductory call between the leaders of the world’s two largest economies touched upon a range of issues against the backdrop of escalating tensions between the US and China.
Biden mentioned potential areas of cooperation during the talk, stressing on economic and military issues including climate change and nuclear proliferation.
According to a senior official from the administration, Biden also highlighted China’s nefarious use of technology, unfair trade practices, and human rights abuses.
China’s Muslim minority Uyghurs and China’s hostility towards Hong Kong were also the key areas of the talk, a White House report stated.
Concerning the importance of the Indo-Pacific region, Biden urged nations in the region to maintain cooperation and peace, as the role of China and India would be significantly important in the future.
