Fire breaks out at Rohingya refugee camp in Bangladesh, 15 deaths reported

DHAKA:

About 15 deaths have been confirmed, 400 missing, and 560 injured after a fire broke out at the Rohingya refugee camp in Unikhya, Cox's Bazar in Bangladesh on Monday.

Reportedly, about 10,000 shelters have been destroyed and the number is likely to climb as the assessment is going on.

Witnesses also said that people could not escape the fire due to the barbed fencing around the camp.

The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) said that it is rushing to provide aid to the 45,000 Rohingya refugees who have lost shelter and goods in the massive fire.

Meanwhile, the Bangladesh officials have intervened to know the cause of the fire.

It may be recalled that the Rohingya refugees had arrived at Cox's Bazar after they fled from the military crackdown in the Rakhine province of Myanmar in 2017.
