MOKOKCHUNG, August 2, 2018: The Tsungremmong Mini Hornbill Festival 2018 kicked off at the Imkongmeren Sports Complex in the city on Wednesday.

The festival is a collective celebration initiated by the state government and people of Mokokchung district.

It was inaugurated by deputy chief minister by Y Patton, who attended the programme as the special guest.

Speaking on the occasion, Patton said Mokokchung district was one of the beneficiaries of the decision taken by the PDA government to organise mini Hornbill festivals coinciding with major festivals of Naga tribes in order to provide a boost to tourism in all the districts and some subdivisions where some tribes were concentrated.

He said the festival was aimed at giving equal opportunities to all Naga tribes to promote local entrepreneurs and showcase their rich and beautiful cultural heritage. He hoped that the mini Hornbill festival would help in promoting brotherhood among neighbouring districts and States.

Patton said the mini Hornbill festival should not be considered as a waste of time, energy and resources, but rather seen as a visionary move taken by the PDA government to encourage people's participation during premier festivals of different Naga tribes.

Mentioning that the state government had rightly termed Mokokchung district as a land of pioneers, Patton remarked that Nagas had a lot to learn from the Ao community, being the pioneers in Christianity, education, music, etc. He said the Aos had contributed immensely to lead the Nagas towards progress, development, unity and harmonious co-existence, besides giving the Naga people a strong leadership in religious, political and social lives.

The PDA was proud to have a good number of representatives from the community in the government who were providing valuable input in running the affairs of the State.

The special guest also inaugurated the exhibition arena where 105 stalls had been put up by various SHGs and government departments.

Earlier in the programme, Higher & Technical Education minister Temjen Imna Along extended Tsungremmong greetings to the people.

The inaugural programme was followed by cultural presentations from various troupes and other items like inter-ward tug of war and inter school U-14 barefooted football match.
