AIZAWL | AUGUST 19, 2020:

Due to the rising cases of COVID-19 in Mizoram, the state's BJP unit sent a petition to the state election commission to postpone the upcoming village and local council polls and scheduled to be on August 27.

The state's BJP president Vanlalhmuaka stated in the letter that if the village council and local council polls will be as per the scheduled date, it will pose a threat of community spreading of the deadly virus.

The letter alleged that the state government is determined to conduct the polls despite the surge in COVID-19 cases and pleading by the opposition parties.

State Election Commission Secretary Teresy Vanlalhruaii, said that the Commission has not thought about postponing the polling dates.

There are 558 village councils with 2,454 seats and 83 local councils with 545 seats within Aizawl municipal.
