Sikkim Bypoll Results: SKM wins Poklok, BJP seals Martam & Gangtok seats

GANGTOK | Oct 24, 2019:

Counting for all the three Assembly constituencies has already ended with the BJP winning two seats – Martam-Rumtek and Gangtok, while its partner, SKM sealed Poklok-kamrang seat.

BJP candidate for Gangtok, YT Lepcha won the assembly seat securing 2492, defeating his closest opponent, independent the D Barfungpa by 998 votes.

In Sikkim, results for Poklok-Kamrang, seat has been declared where SKM Chief PS Golay has secured victory thereby cementing his Chief Minister post.

CM PS Golay wins Poklok Kamrang

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) registered its first win in the tiny Himalayan state of Sikkim after winning the Martam-Rumtek assembly seat.

BJP winning candidate: Sonam Venchungpa

Sonam Tshering Venchungpa (BJP) won the bypoll by 5977 votes securing 8204 votes while SDF's Nuk Tshering Bhutia secured 2054 votes.

Sonam contested in same constituency from SKM ticket in general election losing by a slender margin to SDF. After an alliance he was inducted to BJP.

In the first round, Chief minister PS Golay is leading in Poklok-Kamrang securing 2977 votes followd by Mossess Rai of SDF with 405 votes and SRP's Yedu Kumar Rai with 34 votes. 16 votes went for NOTA.

In Martam Rumtek, Sonam Tshering Venchungpa of BJP is leading securing 2520 votes following by SDF's Nuk Tshering Bhutia with 351 votes, Nima Lepcha of HSP with 285 votes and SRP's Mingma Tshering Sherpa with 54 votes. Independent candidates — Mechung Bhutia (150) and Passang Sherpa with 43 votes.

Counting starts for three assembly constituencies

WHO IS CONTESTING FROM WHERE

Chief Minister of Sikkim Prem Singh Tamang, also the President of the ruling Sikkim Krantikari Morcha (SKM), would be part of a triangular contest with Sikkim Democratic Front's (SDF) Moses Rai and Sikkim Republican Party's (SRP) Yadhu Kumar Rai in the Poklong-Kamrang constituency in South Sikkim district.

In East Sikkim district, six candidates each are contesting for the Bhutia/Lepcha-reserved Assembly constituencies of Martam-Rumtek and Gangtok. Candidates contesting for Martam-Rumtek are Nuk Tshering Bhutia of SDF, Sonam Tshering Venchungpa of BJP, Mingma Tshering Sherpa of SRP, Nima Lepcha of Hamro Sikkim Party, and independent candidates Michung Bhutia and Passang Gyali Sherpa.

Rinzing Ongmu Bhutia of SDF, Yong Tshering Lepcha of BJP, sports icon Bhaichung Bhutia of Hamro Sikkim Party, Diley Namgyal Barfungpa of Sikkim National Peoples' Party, Song Tshering Lepcha of SRP and independent candidate Karma Yenten Chenkapa are contesting for East Sikkim's Gangtok assembly constituency.
