Yoga: Soothing balm in times of COVID-19

HEALTH | JUNE 21, 2020:

The International Day of Yoga has been celebrated annually on June 21 since 2015, following its inception in the United Nations General Assembly in 2014.

Yoga is a physical, mental and spiritual practice which originated in India. The idea of an International Day of Yoga was first proposed by the current Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi, during his speech at the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), on September 27, 2014.

Due to the outbreak of COVID-19, this year, the main focus is on encouraging people to practice Yoga at their homes with the participation of the entire family.

This year, the celebration is centred around the theme "Yoga at Home, Yoga with Family."

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, appealed to the people to perform Yoga at their home with their family members while following all norms of social distancing.

To promote Yoga, 'My Life, My Yoga'- a video blogging contests with attractive prizes are also being organized by the Ministry of Ayush in which the people are being encouraged to post their short video clips performing different Yoga asana.
