By Our Special Correspondent | SHILLONG | Nov 08:

The spirit of the women rights' activists, Agnes Kharshiing and her aide Amita Sangma has not been dampened even after the attempted murder incident which had occurred exactly a year ago today at Tuber Shohshrieh village in East Jaintia Hills.

On November 08 last year, Kharshiing along with Amita were brutally attacked by a group of people after the social activist lodged a complaint on illegal mining and transportation of coal in the district.

While speaking to The Northeast Today-TNT here today, Kharshiing said that the wounds are still fresh in her minds while recalling the horrifying episode which had taken place on this same day one year back.

"But I am not afraid since this incident has made me stronger from inside. Now I am more determined to expose the illegalities which are going in the State," CSWO president, who is also prominent social activist said.

Meanwhile, Kharshiing said that she is upset that the State Government has not constituted an independent inquiry to probe into their case.

"I am not fighting to get justice for myself or for Amita. I am fighting because I do not want to see people face similar consequences like we have gone through. If the people who are responsible for such crimes go scot-free then there will be total lawlessness in the State," she said.

Meanwhile, CSWO president said that she will still demand for a CBI probe since she has no faith in the investigation by the police.

"The nexus between the police, politicians and coal mafia needs to be exposed. This can happen only if independent agencies probe this case. The police will not expose this nexus since they are under control of the Government," Kharshiing alleged.

The CSWO president questioned as to why the police did not include Section 120 (B) of the IPC (criminal conspiracy) when the police probed their case.

"But it is strange that this Section 120 (B) of the IPC were included while probing on the assault case against the police at the same place where they were assaulted," she said.

Moreover, Kharshiing said that the biggest shock is that the State Government has allowed the prime accused in their case, Nidamon Chullet, to transport the auction coal.

"The prime accused who should be inside the bars is now being patronized by this Government. It is sad to see the present state of affairs in the State," CSWO president said.

It may be mentioned that Chullet, who is a senior leader of the ruling National People's Party in Meghalaya, had been accused of involvement in the murderous attack of Kharshiing and Amita. He had even surrendered before the police and later got bail.

Meanwhile, Amita slammed the present MDA Government for protecting people who are "doing illegal things".

"This clearly reflects that this government is being run by coal mafia," she alleged. Amita also said that the State Government had assured that they would institute an independent probe but this never happened. "My children would have become orphans if I was killed during that incident. I want all those people who are involved in the murderous attack to be punished as per the law," she added.

When contacted, DSP Khliehriat, Gilbert L Marshillong said that the police had charge-sheeted the case within three months after the incident. "We had arrested a total number of 26 people in connection with this case," Marshillong said.

Interestingly, the trial of this case is yet to start despite the case being charge-sheeted nine months back.
