## Everyone knows that Mawlynnong is also dubbed as 'Asia's Cleanest village', but do they know that it has been also been also announced as the first 'Smokeless village' in Northeast India.

## Every summer when the rains are at their worst, the numerous streams and rivers of Meghalaya become alive with thunderous and deafening rapids, stopping the local tribes from crossing over. But thanks to the ingenious plan of our forefathers to match the thunderous rivers by bringing life to the bridges. Yes the world's man-made marvels, called the Living Root Bridges.

## For years, this environment friendly village has been able to maintain its posture and continue to bear the tag 'Cleanest village'. This is perhaps one of the reasons why it has been awarded by the Indian Green Building Council (IGBC) for having successfully achieved the Green Building Standards required for the level of certification under IGBC for Green Existing Buildings O & M Rating System and also for Green Village Rating System.

## Prime Minister Narendra Modi had in one of his address in 'Maan Ki Baat' hailed this village for its cleanliness and said that other villages should emulate this good example set by the people of Mawlynnong. This village has attracted many tourists and has welcomed many prominent personalities from film celebrities to royal members. Last year, much to the surprise of the locals, Mawlynnong got a royal visit from the Princess of Thailand Her Royal Highness Maha Chakri Sirindhorn who was on a visit to Meghalaya in November last year.

## This village has everything but designed in a different, unique and natural way so as to ensure that infrastructure does not cause of concern for many critics. From Sky view, an 85 feet high viewing tower that's made of bamboo overseeing not only the entire village but Bangladesh on the other side. It's simply gorgeous.

Now, with each passing year, Mawlynnong has turned into a hub for tourists and the biggest challenge is to keep up with the ever growing demand. While some of the view that the village is on the verge of losing its charm and its tag, others feels that challenges can be met if everybody works together, keeping a proper tap on everything connected with tourism to ensure that the cleanest village does not turn into a plastic village.
